Is your company insured?2024-09-23T09:35:07-05:00

Yes, we are FULLY insured including required workers’ compensation and liability coverages appropriate for our type of work. It is NOT a good idea to hire an uninsured company or individual to provide lawn and landscaping services. Unfortunately, those providers can present challenging situations for owners considering potential risks and liability.

Our Kansas service areas include Fairway, Lenexa, Mission, Overland Park, Shawnee, Leawood, Mission Hills, Olathe and Prairie Village among others.

When will I be billed or invoiced?2024-09-23T09:36:27-05:00

For our weekly mowing customers, Horizon sends an invoice at the end of the following month (unless otherwise specified). With all other project types — landscaping, fertilizer, irrigation, softscapes, hardscapes, and snow removal – these other services will be invoiced upon completion of the project. With landscaping and hardscape projects, a 50% deposit will be required upfront to order materials and secure your spot in the job schedule.

How do I water my new plants and trees?2024-09-03T12:09:32-05:00

When it comes to watering your new plants and flowers, water them once we finish planting and it is key to let the water soak in around the root ball areas. For that first week, water every day, then switch to 2-3 times per week (considering the temperatures and weather conditions). Horizon Lawn & Landscape will provide watering instructions based on specific projects.

Yes, we provide free estimates with most landscape designs and services. You will meet with one of our landscape managers at your property for a consultation. Next, you will receive a free estimate within a few days (depending on size, scale and complexity). If you are looking for a full custom landscape design, this is FREE if Horizon Lawn & Landscape completes the install for your job. (**If we are engaged to do a full design drawing for your project, but unfortunately are not awarded the installation portion of the job, then there will be a design charge for your custom landscape design).

Does landscaping increase my property value?2024-09-23T09:40:59-05:00

Yes – it’s the first impression of your home! Landscaping improves curb appeal and is one of a few types of improvements that is also an investment gaining value over time as plants grow and fill in. What feelings do you experience when you see another home with bright plant color, shapes and depth, and landscape variety adding to the exterior of their home?

How often should I have my lawn aerated and seeded?2024-09-23T09:40:27-05:00

We recommend aerating and seeding your lawn once a year, typically in the fall season (September timeframe, depending on temperatures), to ensure optimal growth and health.

What is fall lawn renovation?2024-09-23T09:40:01-05:00

Fall lawn renovation typically happens in the early fall timeframe (around September, based on local temperatures and precipitation) once the temperatures have consistently cooled off.

Core Aerating – this process decompresses the soil and allows roots access to oxygen, which is called root respiration. Root respiration is critical for ongoing and future plant and turf growth. Without enough oxygen deeper in the ground, root growth can be restricted or even stopped.
Overseeding – turf overseeding annually is a crucial step in maintaining a healthy, beautiful, and thick lawn. Overseeding annually helps improve appearance, fill in bare or thin turf areas, and helps keep weeds out. To maintain the top-quality turf lawn, overseed annually is required and recommended.

Verticut – Verticutting your lawn cultivates the soil so new turf seed can be planted. Seed needs to have 100% soil contact, and no sunlight, to germinate most effectively. Verticutting is the best method to accomplish new growth in bare or challenging locations in your yard. Important to note, during the process of verticutting, some excess thatch and turf will be removed with the machine.

How long do I need to stay off of the lawn?2024-09-23T09:39:36-05:00

For most spray applications, we ask that people and pets remain off the lawn until the weed control has had time to dry (on normal weather days, this will typically take less than an hour). Once the weed control has dried, there is no danger from being on the lawn.

About fertilization & why do I need fertilizer?2024-09-23T09:39:08-05:00

Lawn fertilizer helps your turf stay healthy and disease-free throughout the season. Overtime, soil naturally loses important nutrients through the different seasons. Fertilizer provides a slow-release of key nutrients your lawn needs to maintain a healthy look. Using quality commercial-grade fertilizer will also aid in nutrient absorption, while providing a barrier to protect your lawn from both surface and subsurface insects. These insects can invade and cause massive turf and soil destruction.

Horizon offers six (6) applications annually, including treatments covering early spring, late spring, early summer, summer, fall & winter seasons based on critical nutrients needed in these seasons.

Horizon Lawn & Landscape only uses EPA-approved products and treatments are made by licensed and insured technicians.

Horizon also provides insecticide and pest control applications. Our trained technicians will use a special blend of insecticides designed to target both adults and prevention of future pests. This insecticide can be applied to your turf, landscape beds, and bushes/plants. This treatment typically provides protection for up to 21 days, but is most effective with multiple treatments throughout the year.

What is irrigation system winterization?2024-09-23T09:38:35-05:00

Winterizing your irrigation system can help prevent damage from freezing and extended winter conditions in our area. This process will prevent costly repairs coming out of winter into the spring including frozen lines, stressed connection points, and other potential issues with freezing and thawing of water remaining in your lines. Special attention should be given to removing water from the pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads, before freezing occurs.

What type of maintenance does an irrigation system require?2024-09-23T09:38:17-05:00

Proper maintenance of your home’s irrigation system is important. Performing appropriate and recurring maintenance can reduce water waste, wear and tear, and improve overall plant and turf life at your location. We recommend that your system is checked twice a year – initially when the system is turned on and second time halfway through the peak season – to adjust for appropriate coverage, temperature and seasonality changes, and landscape needs. Regular maintenance includes inspecting the controller, updating watering schedules, checking all wire connections, adjusting heads for proper coverage, repairing any leaks or problem areas, etc.

What is a backflow prevention sssembly and why have it tested?2024-09-23T09:43:13-05:00

A backflow prevention assembly is a mechanical device installed in your private property after the water meter. It prevents water already in your property pipes from “back flowing” into the City water system, possibly contaminating the City’s potable water system. Because the backflow assembly may fail due to foreign matter, it is required by law that they be tested on an annual basis by a certified technician. Horizon Lawn & Landscape is backflow certified for all types of devices including irrigation, fire suppression, and other backflow preventer devices. Please contact us if you require a residential or commercial backflow test performed and get you scheduled!

What is your mow schedule with weather or holidays?2024-09-23T09:43:57-05:00

During regular, non-holiday weeks during the average 32-week mowing season, Horizon services lawns Monday through Friday (weather-permitting). If our mowing schedule is delayed because of inclement weather or unsafe conditions, our services will be delayed until the next day including Saturdays and Sundays (only when necessary). If the Kansas City metro area experiences inclement weather for consecutive days, Horizon will be there as soon as the weather allows us to resume services and avoid potential lawn damage.
